Below is an article from the Potomac
News/Manassas Journal Messenger
published in January 2001, describing a few high profile carpet
installations
by A to Z Carpet & Rug Warehouse including an installation in
the White House.

A to Z Carpet
and Rug Ware-
house is hidden
away in the
second row of
stores in the
Build America
shopping plaza
on U.S. 1 near
Opitz Boulevard.
But that doesn't stop owner Ali Pahlavani from snagging
some very
impressive
customers.
First there was the time in the late 1980's when
Michael Jackson
was staying at
the Park Hyatt
Hotel in
Washington, D.C.
and wanted an
entire floor
re-carpeted.
"We only had a week to do the job" Pahlavani said.
At the same hotel in the early 1990's, Saudi Arabian
King Fahed
arrived with his
entourage, only
to find that the
marble floors in
the executive
suites were too
cold and hard
for their feet.
|
"In
Saudi Arabia the floors are
all cement or stone and
covered with Oriental
carpets, because they don't
walk around with shoes on"
Pahlavani said. "So I got a
call and immediately brought
some Persian carpets- a 3
foot by 5 foot one just for
the bathroom-so they would
be comfortable".
In 1992, Pahlavani was called to re-carpet the
Presidential Suite and
surrounding hallway at the
Hay Adams Hotel, also in
Washington, D.C. in
anticipation of
President-elect Bill
Clinton.
His most recent coup was just last week when he
provided the new carpet for
George W. Bush's Oval
Office.
How did a quiet shop in a semi-obscure shopping plaza
score such a high profile
job?

"Ninety percent
of my business
is referral.
I've been around
for over 20
years" said
Pahlavani, who
came to the
United States as
a soccer player
for the Iranian
National team
with a
scholarship to
the University
of the District
of Columbia. "We
started with a
couple of jobs,
and when they
saw that we are
dependable and
service them
good, we got
lots of
referrals".
The White House
was one of them.
"I've worked with hundreds and hundreds of decorators and
Great American
Heritage, wo has
the contract for
the White House,
knows my name
from that" said
Pahlavani.
The 120 yards of Oval Office carpet made by Coronet
Mills is blue
nylon with a
gold border and
retails for $30
per yard. The
Presidential
Seal carpet will
be "seamed" into
the middle of
the blue carpet.
"It's not wool, but it's a good durable type of nylon with a
continuous
filament" he
said with a
small measure of
excitement.
It isn't until he starts talking about his antique,
hand-made
|
|
Oriental
carpets that his eyes shine.
Pahlavani points out how
soft the silk and baby lamb
feels on one carpet and
where the craftsman's
signature is on another.
"This rug I might sell for $5,000, while on
Wisconsin Avenue in
Washington, D.C. or in Falls
Church it would bo for
$10,000," he said, pointing
to an intricately woven
rust, blue, and yellow
carpet.
"We are the only shop from
Washington to Richmond that
hand-repairs these Oriental
rugs" he said, pulling out a
miniature loom to show
visitors how intricate the
repair work is on the
century old rugs. "Sometimes
people wait for five or six
months for me to have time
to do theirs."
He also appraises and certifies Oriental carpets.
"Although I got a dual
degree in mechanical and
civil engineering and began
studying for my
masters's degree at George
Washington University, I
grew uup arount the business
and I know and love the
industry," he said.
"I really enjoy my job," he said. "If you look at them
and understand the
craftmanship and the quality
of these carpets... I know
and I tell my customers, I
share the knowledge with
them so they
know. Even if they don't
come back to me, they won't
get ripped off if they go
somewhere else." |
